Sony’s PVR add-on for the ever-versatile PlayStation 3 has hit a setback, and will not be appearing for at least a couple of months. Amazon recently listed the peripheral, which enables the console to record HD-quality programmes, as costing £59.99 with a release date of 31 July. Sony has since denied that it has a finalised release date for PlayTV, with codec issues reportedly holding up the development time, and Amazon has pulled all information from its site.

A video service on the PlayStation looks set to become available as early as this summer according to a Sony studio executive. The company is busy in licensing talks with undisclosed studios in order to seal the deal, as well as rival Microsoft’s Xbox 360 Marketplace.

With chatter still at a whisper, industry analysts predict that Sony will have a hard task on its hands rivalling Microsoft’s already set-in-place HD and standard-definition video service, but with the ever versatile PlayStation 3 beginning to become the home media hub of choice, expect this new service to arrive with some hefty studio support.

Onkyo has set a release date for its new line of affordable HD home-cinema receivers. Replacing last year’s popular TX-SR605, £400 will get you the top-of-the-range TX-SR606, which offers 140W 7.1 surround sound, four HDMI inputs and one output, 720p/1080i upscaling, as well as audio decoding for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio.

The TX-SR576 (£300) and TX-SR506 (£250) models also offer 7.1 channel audio, and plenty of inputs/audio decoding, although no HD audio. Look out for them in May.
